Hello Experts,

We are running SAP HANA 1.0 SPS 12 within AWS. I am mandated to find a way to connect to our AWS hosted HANA instance using BI client tools.

I have installed the SAP WEBI 4.2 client tools and followed other blog posts to try to connect the client to my HANA instance. I would like to know if I need to install full blown BOBJ (including CMC, Web tier, etc) just in order to use SAP WEBI client to connect to the HANA instance or can I just make a HANA connection without installaing the BOBJ platform?

I am able to use IDT to make a a relational connection which allows me to see my HANA instance as seen in the attached screen shot.

However, now when I use SAP WEBI and try to connect to my HANA instance using the option SAP HANA, I am not able to make the connection. It looks like I need to authenticate to a BOBJ instance and this is what I am trying to understand. If I use my public elastic IP or hostname in the System field the connection fails.

What am I missing in my understanding?

To use Webi reporting on Hana instance you need to install Sap BO server.

The reason you are getting error in rich client you don't have Sap BO server to authenticate..

you were able to create connection in IDT beacuse you are working locally.without BO server you can not export universe on repository

Thank you for your reply Amit. SAP has invested so much into SAP HANA and so you mean to tell me that the only way to connect to it to run reports is by buying and installing SAP BusinessObjects Server in order to use the client tools? My developers have been successful in using Crystal Reports and SAP HANA client (which is embedded into Excel) but what are the other client tools I can use to run reports? It seems to be that installing a Business Objects server is a bit much just to use SAP WEBI. Do you agree?

BO server setup is not just about webi reporting.semantic layer which is universe for your all type of webi/crystal/design studio/lumira.

It's a enterprise tool set .

Purpose of Crystal reports and webi reports are different.Webi is more for your day to day reporting where business users can create there adhoc deep knowledge required to build reports like crystal.

Amit, consider this for a moment. My organization has a SAP HANA 1.0 SPS 12 database only instance in AWS. We have loaded some tables into our HANA database to perform/excute some sample report. My developers have created analytical and calculation views in the HANA database instance. Now, we want to display/report on this data. You are saying that the only way to execute a report is to now install BO just to use SAP WEBI? Am I missing something here? Why would SAP invest so much into HANA and then turn around and say, well to run reports you now have to install BO? What are the client tools that I should use besides HANA Client (which is based out of excel) and SAP Crystal report which you say requires deep knowledge. Not trying to disagree but just trying to understand why is it so hard to connect to a HANA database and run/create and great looking report.

Yes if you want to use webi for reporting then you need to setup the BO server setup.

For tools you can explorer this link.

HANA is one SAP component of SAP.It's doesn't mean if you have HANA then you will do everything with HANA.

It's not difficult to connect with HANA but you need right components for right type of reporting.
