Upgrade 7.3 32-bit to 7.5 64-bit

Hi there,

while preparing our Upgradeplan for our new Server, some Questions came up.

Old Sys: HP Netserver 3x700 Mhz 32bit PIII.

New Sys: Fuj. Sie. 2x3.0 GHZ DualCore Xeons.

Sles 9 (64bit)

1. Install new Sys with SLES 9 64bit, SAP DB 7.3 32 bit,

4.6d_ext 32bit.

2. Homogenous Databasecopy from Old to New System.

3. Upgrade New System from 7.3 to 7.5. 32-bit

4. TEST the New System (2-3 Weeks)

5. Freeze all work on the old Sys.

6. Upgrade old Sys to 7.5 32bit

7. Now we are able to do an Homogenous Systemcopy in the new Sys.

8. Cut Off Old Sys. Go Live New Sys.

optional steps-----

9. Upgrade 32 bit to 7.5 64 bit

10. Upgrade SAP Kernel 4.6d_ext 32 -> 4.6d_ext 64

1. Is Step 9 Possible? (Didn't find anything..)

2. Should i do Step 9 and 10 at the same Weekend when switching from old to new Sys?. (This configuration is not tested....)

3. What benefits comes with steps 9,10?

Thx for help

Greets Manuel

    sorry for the late answer.

In general, we don't support 32bit applications on 64bit platforms.

Next to the above, you can also make a socalled migration backup in 7.3, which you could recover directly in a 7.5 instance. And as long as the byte-swap architecture is the same (as in this case), you can use that backup (of a 32bit db instance) for a recovery in a 64bit instance.

Your steps would then look a bit different:

    1. Install new sys with SLES 9 64bit, MaxDB 7.5 64bit, 4.6d_ext 64bit.

    2. Homogenous databasecopy from Old (7.3 - 32bit) to New (7.5 - 64bit) system (using the mentioned migration backup).

    3. Test the New System (2-3 Weeks)

    4. Freeze all work on the old sys.

    5. Second homogenous systemcopy in the new sys (using a new 7.3) migration backup

    6. Cut Off Old sys. Go Live New sys

If you need some more information about the migration backup or anything else, just ask.
