Data structure of Material Master

Dear Gurus

I understand that the material master data can be maintained on different levels (ie Client, Plant, Storage Location) but I do not fully understand the whole concept and how I should be looking at it.

Below are some questions that I would like to seek clarification on:

1) How do we identify materials that are "active" at plant level?

Say for example, if I only enter a plant code in MB52, can I imply that the output will be the list of items that are "active" at the plant?

2) Is there a way to control the materials' "activity" status at these levels?

For example, if a material has not been sold for 5 years, I would like to remove it from the supplying plant (so when I run MB52 again, this material will not show up). Is it correct to work in this way?

3) What constitute to a valid material master record in SAP?

Is it correct to say that the material master record can be maintained at different levels; ie at client level only/ client + plant/ client + plant + storage location?

Can a material only exist in client/ plant level but not in storage location level?

Thanks!
