Folks,
Has anyone of you encountered this error message in the uwl log file:
"Internal error in calling BWF API to retrieve inbox items in system SAP_R3_BP:java.lang.RuntimeException: Native connection to the back end system is broken."
This error has caused my work items not displayed in Portal UWL.
Any help is much appreciated. Thank you.

in my case, this was related to missing authorizations on the backend system.

I have also just started seeing this error. Additionally in the connection window on the UWL the system shows an error:
Exception type:com.sap.netweaver.bc.uwl.connect.ConnectorException Message:Thu Oct 26 13:33:43 UTC 2006 (Connector) :java.lang.RuntimeException:Native connection to the back end system is broken.
Any idea on how to fix this?
