Web Intelligence 4.2 issue with Chrome and Edge 110

andrea_nadal
Explorer

HI,

I write because we are experiencing problems in Business Objects 4.2 with version 110 of Chrome and Edge (the first already released, while for the second we tested with the beta).

With this version of the 2 browsers, the update of the webi reports hangs indefinitely even with reports that with the previous versions were updated in a few seconds.

From the Network section of Chrome's DevTools it seems to loop:

We have tested on various customer environments and it seems that the problem is present in all 4.2, while 4.3 seems to be unaffected.

I have not seen any notes or other communications from SAP regarding this.

Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Thanks in advance

Andrea

Is this affecting scheduled reports?

it is not affecting scheduled reports. the issue happens in chrome and edge as of version 110. we fixed it temporarily by GPO force rollback to 109.

Hi Andrea,

we're experiencing the same symptoms with Edge Version 110.0.1587.41 (Offizielles Build) (64-Bit)

Scheduled Reports run fine. Interactive reports hang forever when refreshing.

Firefox is working fine for us.

Dear all, 'Refresh' reports does not return results, using 'Design' and 'Run Query' does. It seems that it has something to do with Java applets used in the Refresh functionality and not the Run Query functionality.

This happens from Monday 13 February. We wonder if this is related to using a newer Java version.

The question is, how can we fix this?

Will SAP be able to do this?

Hello,

We also run into similar issue with Chrome version 110.0.5481.97 not working on SAP BO 4.2 SP07 and SP09 versions. Below Chrome new version works Version 110.0.5481.100 and We have tested SAP BO 4.2 SPO 07 and SP09 working as expected.

Yes, the newly released Chrome version 110.0.5481.100 is working for us as well. The release notes specifically say it's for this issue.

This is currently a P1 with Google, you can go Star it or comment if you desire:

https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=1414463

As far as I know, the only options currently are to roll back Chrome/Edge, use Firefox, or try IE11 emulation mode in Edge which was never supported, but should probably work. At least it seemed to in my quick test.

Update:

The latest release of Chrome, version 110.0.5481.100, works and resolves the issue.

4.2 SP9 Patch 13 is still coming out to address it for people who cannot update yet.

We are still waiting on MS Edge to incorporate Chromes update with the fix.

While you wait, you can try using IE Compatibility in Edge to work around it for now.

One workaround is to put Edge into IE compatibility mode for the Business Objects sites:

I Andrea, I've found a workaround which is :

- Open your webi report.
- Cancel if you have a prompt.
- Go in design mode
- Edit data Provider
- Refresh one query
- Run Queries

You give edit rights to ALL your users in BO? Not really a proper solution to the problem.

This does not work for me. Strangely data did appear on screen though, but the refresh window staying open spinning indefinitely.

However, if there is only one query it works. I thought I had tried that before but it must have been a report with multiple queries.

And yes, we do give edit rights to all users, but not save rights. So they cannot overwrite any production reports, but edit mode is the only way you can do certain things like sort.

The latest release of Chrome, version 110.0.5481.100, works and resolves the issue.

All you have to do is either force an update to your users or launch right from Chrome browser via "Help" > "About"

According to the PAM, the mentioned version is no longer supported since 31.12.2022, so don't expect new patches from SAP.

Maybe the latest ones released already have a correction to the error, but if not you will need to upgrade to 4.3

We've discovered one other issue due to this bug -

If you open a scheduled report instance, which otherwise isn't affected, but change input control filters, it also spins forever trying to refresh the screen. It's not executing a query and doesn't display the dialog box however.

Correct, that was one of the many workflows impacted by the Chrome regression.

    Chromes latest update fixes it.

We do not know when MS will update Edge with the same update.

We are on SP9 patch 7. These are the options I see mentioned and our experience with them.

    • IE has been disabled by Microsoft as of today, that is not an option.
    • Edge and Chrome are set to update automatically at my company. Changing that is not an option, so downgrading is not an option.
    • Edge compatibility mode does not work for us. With my division's installation, reports do not refresh automatically, and when refreshed manually they just hang, prompts do not even appear. At another installation (SP8), reports refresh ok but cannot be exported, which is a requirement.
    • Firefox is not one of our standard browsers, but it works well so we are considering it. But it requires changes to the configuration for SSO to work, so we are looking at how to automate that.
    • Webi Rich Client is not an option, it requires a desktop license for everyone.
    • Fiori Launchpad - it doesn't work for editing, and everyone hates it.
    • Upgrade to 4.3 - we do work for the government, so we cannot upgrade without full validation, which takes a tremendous amount of resources. Aside from the fact that everyone hates it ...
    • Schedule the reports and then View Latest Instance - works but inconvenient, and changes cannot be tested without saving them first.
    • Go into Edit Query mode and Refresh - only works for reports with single queries.

So there is no good option at this point, not sure which one(s) we'll pick.

One other thing I noticed is that brand new ad-hoc reports run fine the first time, but can't be refreshed afterwards.

We ran into this issue today as well after the Google Chrome updated the version.

What we did as a workaround, is to go into the edit, and refresh the query of an existing report and that will work.

Also if you download Firefox browser that will work the old way to refresh from the 'refresh icon' with no issues.

IE compatibility mode in affected Edge versions has resolved the issue for us.

We've pushed this out via group policy to user browsers until Edge gets a working version released

We discovered this issue yesterday and thought we had it fixed using compatibility mode, but this morning we've discovered that exporting to Excel causes BI Launchpad to throw the user back to the logon screen and prompts for credentials (we use AD SSO so they usually don't see this)

as far as we know it works with note 3299450. with this guide user can enable IE11. For now it works.

    But we're all waiting for 4.2 SP9 patch...but what about 4.1, 4.0,....???

4.1 EOM 2018 EOP1 2020 - IMHO no chance here - we would be lucky to get patch for 4.2 SP09 in Prio1 support.

I've got customers at various patch levels of SP9 and SP8 for whom it doesn't work. I think it probably extends to anyone using HTML mode in the legacy BI Launch Pad from any version of BI 4.2.

I am getting this same issue, so far 2 or 3 customers have made contact and I am getting the same issue on our internal BI 4.2 system as well.

It seems workarounds that don't require a 4.3 upgrade project are as follows:

    1. Use the Fiorifield BI Launch Pad - however in 4.2 there is no edit option
    2. Downgrade Chrome and Edge to an older version and prevent update (not tried that yet)
    3. Use a different browser (Firefox, or (shudder) IE!)
    4. Use Web Intelligence Rich Client

Downgrading chrome back to 109 has worked for us. Fortunately, it had only rolled out to about 1/4 of our footprint before we caught it.

A further workaround, which seems like the best option, is to use IE Mode in Edge.

I've got one customer for whom IE mode doesn't work, but it does work for the other customers. I'm thinking maybe there's some kind of group policy or similar which prevents IE mode working properly. Certainly it's the best option if it works!

    Hi Manuel,

The BO 4.2 is out of Mainstream Maintenance, but is still in Priority One Support for 2 years. If the platform stops working with 2 of the 3 supported browsers, that's not a minor issue, but I'd rate it very-high.

I'm not expecting a new SP, but an official communication of some kind from SAP with at least a workaround or explicit indication that the only solution is to switch to 4.3.

We still have dozens of customers at 4.2, and we can't force everyone to bulk upgrade to 4.3 in a few days unless there is an official communication from SAP indicating that that is the only solution.

to get such a communication , you will need to open an support incident with SAP under BI-RA-WBI component.
