category identifier variable for refurbished product in SAP S4 HANA Cloud

This query is for SAP S4 HANA cloud. Customer has not activated scope IDs that would allow process of refurbishment order. SAP suggests use of valuation type (Split valuation) for refurbished product and damaged product.

However customer does not want to create new valuation type.

Since the volume is less, customer wants some identifier that would distinguish refurbished product from damaged product. Initially customer explored possibility of using ABC classification in the serial number to distinguish both. This was not possible as for serial number managed product ABC category is maintained in the material master.

Is it possible to identify any identifier variable in the serial number fields (Serial numbers would be manually created)

I could not identify a suitable field in the Serial Number app Change Material Serial Number ( IQ02 ) directly but classification ( Class Overview button ) is enabled in this app.

A suggestion would be to consider creating a Class of type 002 Equipment in the Manage Classes app In the Class you could create a characteristic like 'refurbishment state' and then assign it to the equipment

Now , when serial numbers are created / changed - the characteristic value of 'refurbishment state' can be updated to reflect its current condition.
