My company is using SAP [PEP] S/4 One Client HANA - PRD and my group primarily make kits using various purchased components and shipped directly to our customers. An example would be our Splice Kits. There could be several variations to a kit based on what the customer requests. For example a base kit BOM could consist of a splice body, tape, mastic, wrenches, and sealing pads. A variation of this kit could include components to ground the splice, splice connectors (various sizes available) or cleaning items. If I want to create a BOM for all the possible possibilities there'd be thousands of finished good part numbers. My main issue is that I want to avoid creating multple BOMs for the same kit because a customer wants the same items another one requested 2 months ago. What's the best way to manage these?
I have searched online and various questions to see if I can find something that may work. An Alternative BOM might work but I'm not sure. I've asked local IT and they've been unhelplful (lack of people and knowledge).
I don't know if the SAP Managed Tag is correct and honestly don't know which one to select. I didn't find any that menitoned Bill of Materials or BOMs...
I just want to talk this through with someone who actually knows this software and the best praticies use for a kitting process with a moderate amount of components but high variablilty in the number and quanitiy of components kitted.
Consider the picture below. This is a rough example of a splice kit. Each kit has a set of "required" components (ie. minimual parts required). These are listed in columns B through I in the picture below. Components in columns J through S as added based on customers request. For instance a customer may want the kit to include a 2AWG connector, PVC Electrical Tape, Copper Tape and Instructions tailor for dealing with only Copper Tape Shieled (CTS) cable. In that case I could offer "Kit Base-1". I could make a database in Access or Excel to create an extensive table detailing all the possibilites so I can filter through the selections to uncover the Kit part number but that seems terribly inefficient since SAP should be able to manage all this data and help with kit selection or tell me if a kit version needs to be made.
