Which SAP structure for my plant (BOM/Material/construction-type difference) ?

Dear community,

I am not sure I understood the right structure to use for my plant, concerning the plant maintenance.

Currently, a functional location contains the following equipment: Motor, reductor, pump. I would like to assign the spare parts of the pump, which have been standardized in SAP PM as material (gasket, seals...).

In the plant, I have several pumps of the same model, with the same spare parts. In SAP PM I have also standardized the complete pump as spare part material.

What is the right way to structure this?

1) Should the pump be in SAP as a material or equipment or maintenance assembly (and should I have different SAP equipment/material for two identical pump in different functional location ?) ?

2) Should I make a material or equipment BOM ?

3) Should I use the material construction type? And so which material/material type do I have to use/create for this ?

4) Should I have the BOM assigned directly or indirectly?

5) How should I put the material corresponding to the complete pump in this structure?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Don't hesitate for further explanation.

Hello community,

At least, I would like to know what is the type of the material (in MM01) that I have to use in the construction-type field.

And where do I use the standardized complete pump (spare part material) in this structure ?

Hi Florian!
As you already noticed - there are various ways of approaching this scenario.
In your case - if you have many equipments the same type, with the same BOM, you should follow the below path. I will use your example (pump).

1. Create a material 'Pump' - material type IBAU (tcode MM01)
This way you will create some kind of a group - you will then use it for your 'Pump' equipments in PM.

2. Create a BOM for the above Pump (tcode CS01)
Specify all the relevant Spare parts there.

3. Assign the IBAU material to the Pump equipments.
Use 'Construction type' field in the equipments and enter the IBAU material number there.

This way you keep all the Pump equipments structured with just one BOM. Of course, depending on the scenarios, this has its ups and downs.

I hope it helped,
Dan

Hi Dan !

Thank you for your great help ! I will follow your advices and go this way.

Do you know how I can use the standardized ERSA material representing the whole pump ? Should I add it to the material BOM, or should I simply must not add it to this structure ?

Thank you !

Florian

Hi Florian.

If your BOM of the ERSA material resembles the whole pump, spare parts and the components that are shown as an equipment in the picture, it could be confusing when you drill down to component level in your structure. These components would then be shown twice in the structure. Once as material number in the BOM and once as equipment (in the construction type field of the equipment). This then typically would happen if you assign the ERSA to the construction type field of the Floc.

In general using the IBAU to assign a group of the same spare parts is a best practice as Dan stated. You could also opt to assign that material to the Floc construction type or use it in the Floc BOM. Then the spare parts and equipments are direct visible under your Floc.

It can help if you test the different options in a sanbox/development system and then decide what works the best in your situation.

Good luck
