SPDD and SPAU TR during SP Upgrade via SPAM or Add-On Installation via SAINT

Dear Guru's,

I have few questions with respect to SPDD and SPAU TR which is created during any SP Upgrade or any Add-On Installation. I got confused with SUM which is slightly different from SPAM/SAINT Upgrade.

REquest you to help me out with answers on below questions

Questions:

1. During Any Upgrade via SPAM or SAINT in Development System, if there is any modification need to be performed. We will be capturing the changes in a TR and we will be marking as SPDD and SPAU one right?. Whether releasing the Sub-Task alone enough or we need to release the Main TR as well?

2.Suppose if its not required to release the Main TR. During similar Upgrade in QAS, we will be including the TR in adjustment queue right? which in turn SPAM or SAINT will automatically picks it up?

3.Suppose if I have released the Main TR, how to proceed in QAS System - Do I need to import the Main TR first or After completing the Upgrade in QAS I can import or during SPDD and SPAU phase I can import

Could you please help me in above queries

Thanks & Regards,

Mithran

Hi Andreas Lichtenau,

Thanks a lot for your response. I checked on the SAP Note regarding SPDD and SPAU Handling.

Could you please confirm whether this is the below process or how it should be done:

1.In Dev SPDD and SPAU changes will be captured in 2 TRs each for SPDD and SPAU and Main TR will be released right?.

2.In QAS - we will add those TRs in Modification Adjustment Transport right?

3. If suppose I did not add it in Adjustment Transport - Can I import during SPDD Phase whether it will stop for the import?

4. If I start Upgrade as Background whether it will stop during SPDD Phase and allow us to Import?

5.Since we will be using DDIC for Upgrade whether it will allow DDIC User to move the transport?

Thanks & Regards,

Mithran

Hi Mithran

1. After the SPDD & SAPU you have to release the main request to use subsequent systems in your landscape.

2 & 3. If you are using the SUM it will ask for any transport of SPDD & SPAU, since you are using the SPAM/SAINT you have to do the manual transport of the change request during the upgrade time.

Hi S Sriram,

Thanks a lot for your response. Manual Transport means like during SPDD phase we have to move it manually? when we use SPAM/SAINT right? Is it after completion of the Upgrade or even before starting the Upgrade

Hi mithran.vel,

now I understand... sorry! 🙂

SPAM will stop in error cases and during SPDD and SPAU phases. So you can do adjustments.

Simply monitor SPAM from time to time.

Hi Andreas Lichtenau,

Once again, Thanks a lot for carifying all my queries.

HI mithran.vel,

to answer your last question:

I'm not aware of a background mode for SPAM. Below scenarios are available:

Standard
You use the standard scenario to import Support Packages completely. All steps are performed.

Import Mode Downtime-Minimized
If you choose the standard scenario, you can also choose import mode downtime-minimized to reduce the downtime. In the default setting, this option is deactivated. The packages are imported using the conventional import method.
Note: to find the best import mode for your system, check the prerequisites under Import Mode: Downtime-Minimized.

Test
Use the test scenario to determine if a modification adjustment is required before the Support Package is actually imported, or if any conflicts need to be resolved before the import. The test scenario does not import data into your SAP system. There is no test scenario for SPAM/SAINT updates. A SPAM/SAINT import ignores the scenario you select.

Please find more information in SAPhelp or SAP Note 1803986.

Andreas

Hi Andreas Lichtenau,

Thanks a lot for explaining my queries. On the Background part for SPAM, My question was for below Option for Import1 and Import2 of Defining start options. where if we choose background option - whether we will be stopped for SPDD or after its completed we will get or we need to execute SPDD transaction for checking it. I have mistakenly mentioned as background without giving much information on my end in my earlier request. Apologies for that.

Thanks & Regards,

Hi mithran.vel,

as I said, you find all in the notes. Please follow the advices there.

1. Before starting the adjustments, create two Workbench request (SE01), one for SPDD and one for SPAU.

2. After the queue has been defined, the system asks you whether you want to include modification adjustment transports. Confirm that this is the case. (Prerequisite: choose SPAM/SAINT menu Extras -> Settings and mark "Include adjustment transports" or "Always ask" on the Tab Page: Defining a Queue)

3./4. Yes, I think so. Otherwise: Do a ToC, include the objects of the SPDD request and flag it in SPDD. Afterwards SAP_ADJUST should be added.

5. Use a user different than DDIC (copy of DDIC). See SAP Note 1998382.

Cheers,
Andreas

Hi Andreas Lichtenau,

Thanks a lot for the detailed explanation.
One Last Question:

1. Which is best for doing an upgrade via SPAM - whether to run the upgrade as background or Dialog mode. Since if we are running in Dialog Mode SPDD phase as well as other phases we might get a stop and we will look into it.
If we are running in Background whether it will stop in SPDD Phase ? like in Dialog Mode. Suppose if it does not stop we need to run SPDD at last and resolve it right?

I have done so far only with Dialog Mode option. Hence wanted to know in Background also its possible.

Thanks & Regards,

Mithran

Hi Mirhtan

For all your question you can refer to the SAP Note 1970888, as rightly mentioned by Andreas.
