GR/GI Zones as Storage locations

Hello,

Started studying SAP EWM. Some questions. Can someone clarify who has practical experience !

a) Lets say we have a warehouse building. Is the inside of the entire warehouse be divided into different storage locations. I.e. one storage location for GR Zone(Staging area) and another storage location for GI area (staging area)?

b) Once we move inside the warehouse, is the area where bins are kept, are such bin areas also marked as storage locations ?

c) If the entire warehouse is divided into storage locations, then how is storage types fit in ?

The confusion arises since the availability group is assigned to Plant and storage location and then in a EWM Book, the storage locations mentioned were Available for sale and Receive on dock and so that means the entire area inside the warehouse is divided into storage locations !

Hi Sachan,

Plants and storage locations belong to the ERP side. Storage types, sections, areas, bin, GR / GI area etc. belong to EWM.

Both have to be connected through the warehouse number (one in ERP, one in EWM) and the availability group settings.

A typical set up - but not necessarily required as such - is to have one storage location (ERP!) for stock that is being received ("Received on dock", ROD) and one for available stock ("Available for sales", AFS). These storage locations are then assigned to availability groups in EWM.

"Inside" EWM it's up to you to assign an availability group to a storage type (or several). When stock moves around the warehouse from storage type to storage type it will change from storage location to storage location (in ERP) when the availability group changes on the way.

Hope that helps - well worth to understand that concept as it is key to the ERP-EWM interface.

thanks Andreas

Conceptual clarity is important. Can we also say the place where the physical warehouse is present, that entire place is a storage location. Iam saying this since plant plus storage location = warehouse.

Iam sd consultant for 10 Yrs. Want to shift to Ewm. Any tips . And is there a user manual available for Ewm .

Well, yes and no.

On the ERP side you assign plant + storage location to a warehouse number. I.e. you can assign more than one combination of plant and storage location.

Accordingly, you can have stock of more than one storage location under one warehouse number (both ERP and EWM).
