How to build the sol doc configuration library?

I am just getting started with Solution Documentation and I am struggling with building out the configuration library? The company has been on SAP ECC for 20 years and it seems like a daunting task to try to build a structure and document all the configuration completed in those 20 years. Does anybody have suggestions on how to structure the library and how to get the documentation started? or is there some method to fill the library (like the execution library) that I am missing?

When I'm asking my customers about the documentation - it is funny, that all said at the begin, we have all documentated. During the project, the truth came up (no actual documents available, most of the information is forgotten, ...) - and now the teams document in the same way like before.

The good thing now:

- We have SAP Bestpractices available and it is all IMG-Settings now documented - and they have also changed during the last 20 years. Therefore document it now - NEW in the project and let the history in the graveyard.
