Link components serial number to equipment part number

Hello All,

say we have certain equipment let's say PUMP which has a unique part number in the market say (1000000), this pump has several components, each has a unique serial number inside each pump from the vendor itself

how do I link the 2 numbers so that I will be able to track and report the situation ?

Create an equipment heirachy to link all the equipment together.

I agree with Peter's response - if you want to keep them as equipment records that's the best way to do it.

I've also seen some departments in my company track this using class and characteristics. Assuming that you will never write notifications or orders for the "components" of the pump and that those components will not usually be uninstalled in one pump and re-installed in another, characteristics are a good option.
