Material Master Replication in S/4 HANA - IDoc or SOA webservice?

Hi Experts,

We are implementing MDG 1909 on S/4 HANA single cloud tenant edition. In all my earlier implementations, I used IDoc for Material Master data replication to downsteam systems. Now as we are working on S/4 HANA, can we use SOA webservice instead of IDoc here...? If yes, kindly help me have the answers of the following Qs:

1) which SOA service I should use...is it PRODUCTMDMBULKREPLICATEREQUEST or MATERIALERPBULKREPLICATEREQUEST?

2) Kindly let me know the exact the service name as I can see this blog(https://www.sap.com/documents/2015/07/48a1314e-5b7c-0010-82c7-eda71af511fa.html) used "MaterialERPBulkReplicateRequest_In", which is an inbound service to MDG. Did not clearly understand instead of using an outbound service for replication, why they used an inbound service?

3) Is it ok to use IDoc as Communication Channel in S/4 HANA for doing replication?

4) What is SAP's recommended approach for material replication in S/4 HANA? SOA or IDoc? Would be highly helpful if you could shed some light on my questions.

Regards, Titu

Hi titu4mdg ,

All of your questions are answered in the SAP note 2402120. You can check with your integration team, if you can use the Product master API, which would also be a good approach in S4.

Hi Senthil,

Thanks for your reply. I just went through the note you asvised...but I did not see any SOA Message replication technique mentioned for material master data in the note..it only talked about IDoc serialization technique....does it mean we can not use SOA message for material master replication from MDG Hub to S4 HANA downstream system?

Hi titu4mdg ,

Yes, currently only IDoc replication is the preferred way, as per the note. Of course, you can explore the API as i mentioned.

Hi Senthil,

Thanks for your reply.

So, how will we replicate material master data from SAP MDG to any Non-SAP downstream systems....is Middleware(SAP PI-PO) mandatory in that scenario?

Hi Senthil,

I just found a link - given below...it talks about the Material Master data replication using SOA message in MDG 1909...I am little confused

https://help.sap.com/viewer/6d52de87aa0d4fb6a90924720a5b0549/2020.001/en-US/e4d13754377d024be1000000...

Oh my bad, this(https://help.sap.com/viewer/6d52de87aa0d4fb6a90924720a5b0549/2020.001/en-US/e4d13754377d024be1000000...) is only for Inbound to MDG...so,

1) can this be then used for auto CR creation for material master data in MDG?

Going back my earlier Q:

2) how will we replicate material master data(if it only supports IDoc) from SAP MDG to any Non-SAP downstream systems....is Middleware(SAP PI-PO) mandatory in that scenario?

Hi titu4mdg ,

1) Yes, as of now only inbound SOA service is only available and it can be extended as well for inbound CR processing.

2) Yes, in this case you need a middleware to replicate to a Non-SAP system.

Senthil.
