ABAP Persistence Class vs ABAP CDS?

Hi experts,

This two infrastructure belong different layer or persistence class was replaced by CDS? CDS is new one, and has upper level than persistence class?

I can imagine CDS have more 'SELECT' functionality(more unions, calculation, annotation) than persistence class. But how about 'UPDATE'? using this two together?
