Hi, ALL,

I just updated my system (Linux) including kernel and now running the server produces following:

Hi Igor,

During this moment in the boot sequence, ASE will perform some work related to initializing the SNAP functionality. It appears the initialization is not compatible with the version of Linux (5.10.27-gentoo version #1 SMP). Keep in mind, this initialization will occur whether "simplified native access plan" is enabled or not.

The workaround/cure for this is to boot ASE with trace flag 11889 which will skip this initialization and allow ASE to boot. When using this trace flag, please be sure to not enable "simplified native access plan" in the configuration as it has been effectively turned off in the bootstrap. This stacktrace is also reported in KBA 3018138.

Thanks

Dan

dan.thrall ,

OK, so it looks like its a known issue?

Now, it still feels like the hack to turn something off in the configuration of the server.

I also have some questions:

1. What is SNAP functionality? From what you said I think it is not important for the server to function properly and can be switched off. Is my understanding correct?

2. Should I, as the end-user of the server, even care about this?

3. Will there be a patch (or maybe a minor release) that will fix the crash? Or maybe its already out? If it is - where can I get it? And if its a patch - is there an instructions on how to apply it?

Thank you.

So, how do I do it?

I unfortunately can't access the link you referenced, since it requires a higher level ,login.

Help?

Thank you.

Hi Igor,

You will add a -T11889 to your RUN_server file and restart ASE.

Example from my ASE:

/ase/sp04/ASE-16_0/bin/dataserver \
-d/data/rel16/sp04/m.dat \
-e/ase/sp04/ASE-16_0/install/sp04.log \
-c/ase/sp04/ASE-16_0/sp04.cfg \
-M/ase/sp04/ASE-16_0 \
-N/ase/sp04/ASE-16_0/sysam/sp04.properties \
-i/ase/sp04 \
-ssp04 \
-T11889 \

As you can see, the last line of the RUN_server file added the -T11889

Once set, you'll see the following lines in the log at boot time:

00:0002:00000:00000:2021/05/19 14:18:04.73 kernel *** NOTE ***: SNAP structure validation is being skipped as TF 11889 is ON. 00:0002:00000:00000:2021/05/19 14:18:04.73 server Active traceflags: 11889

Best Regards

Thanks a lot, I was having problems with docker containers running sybase when we upgraded to version 20.n.n docker engine. This fixes it for all of our instances.

Check ASE config parameter 'simplified native access plan' if it is set to 1 , set it to 0 .

Issue appears to be in code relewvant fo simplified native access plans.

I suggest to upgrade to ASE 16.0 SP03 PL09 orPL10 instead of PL02 . PL02 is quite back level . (SP03 PL10 is not yet released but expoected by end of May)

With kind regards

tilman.model-bosch ,

What is the difference? What is controlled by this option?

I think I didn't set some option(s) during kernel configuration or set incorrectly. I was hoping to find which one.

This looks like a workaround.

Thank you.

Hi Igor,

Yes, changing the "simplified native access plan" configuration is a workaround. The option
is documented here https://help.sap.com/viewer/a7b3e46335184f5caf70a08c91c540f3/16.0.3.7/en-US/39657c5e52f54a0b95eca500...

I don't think you did anything incorrectly - there is a defect CR open in engineering for this problem,
see KBA 3018138 (you can mark it as a favorite to be automatically notified when the CR is resolved).

Cheers,
-bret

bret.halford ,

How do I check that option?

From the link you referenced I see only the info and links to switching this option on/off from the running server...

Thank you.

Is ASE 16.0 SP03 PL09 is a stable version? I am planning to upgrade from ASE 15.7

Did you also try traceflag 11889?

Hi Igor,

This functionality is part of the simplified native access plan which is not enabled by default. Please see the documentation for more information.

If you aren't using SNAP, disabling this initialization is a non-issue and ASE will operate as normal.

At this time a fix is not available, the trace flag can be used to prevent this issue from happening.

Thanks

Dan

dan.thrall ,

I posted a reply with the results to the first answer.

I believe that SNAP has a DEFAULT value which is OFF (0).

Anything else I can look for?

Thank you.
