data migration from SAP ECC to SAP S/4HANA onpremise

Dear All,

We need to create data migration strategy for ECC -> S/4HANA (on-premise) transition . Does SAP recommends DMC or RDS ? Also what tools are available for extract and transform ?

Secondly, can you kindly share a blog for this migration which says SAP recommended tools & scenarios. I don’t need much of you time. Kindly share a blog with SAP recommendations which could be my starting point and rest I will create.

Hi Somraj,

for data migration ECC - SAP S/4HANA, we recommend using the SAP S/4HANA Migration Cockpit - approach "migrate data directly from SAP System". Here you connect to ECC and extract data directly via RFC, migration objects are predefined.

Dear sybille.lackermeier : Thank you for your answer. I need some additional details. Can you kindly point me towards some details about Rapid Data Migration with SAP Data Services (RDM). When shall we use RDM ? Is it still recommended by SAP ?

Also, there were few more tools as below. Are these relevant anymore or deprecated ?

1) SAP Information Steward (IS)

2) SAP HANA Virtual Data Models (VDM)

3) SAP SLT (for extraction)

4) HVR Data Replication (HVR)

Hi Somraj

Note that steps for migration would be dependent on the version you have

There are notes which you could refer as below

2475034 - Migration Cockpit & SLT on S/4 HANA On-Premise Edition 1709

2890888 - Migration Cockpit & SLT on S/4 HANA On-Premise Edition 2020

2848224 - Migration Cockpit: Collective KBA for Business Partner (Customer, Supplier)

2537549 - Collective SAP Note and FAQ for SAP S/4HANA Migration cockpit - File/Staging (on premise / S4CORE)

Data Migration is managed with three Transactions: LTMOM : Migration Object Modeler LTMC : Migration Cockpit MWB : Migration Workbench

Here is a blog I had written in the past pl have a look and see if this helps

Hope that helps!

peritos_solutions : Thank you for the details. It was really helpful.

One doubt – in data migration (ECC -> S4H) for extract and transform which tools does SAP recommend ?

Hello Somraj,

Here you can start:

From SAP ECC to SAP S/4HANA; basically Data Migration Cockpit LTMC will be used load to S/4 with pre-defined data migration objects/templates. The key point here how/which data will be extracted/transferred from ECC and how will be converted/migrated to S/4 LTMC objects/templates.

Options:

  • Developing ABAP programs
  • Using SAP Data Services (BODS)

As medium options are (1) Using Files (2) HANA staging tables and (3) directly from SAP system.

Hello tuncay.karaca : When we use SUM/DMO for a conversion project then it does some data migration isnt it ? What is the delta that we should target to achieve ? Kindly can you suggest.

Hi Somraj,

What is SUM/DMO? Do you mean Database Migration Option (DOM) of Software Update Manager (SUM) ?

Hello tuncay.karaca : yes SUM/DMO is software update manager and Database Migration Option. My understanding is below. Can you kindly confirm.

  • 1)DMC is applicable for greenfield only. We can have ECC as source (legacy) but the implementation should be greenfield (i.e. no transition by SUM/DMO).
  • 2)For ECC -> S/4HANA conversion (i.e. SUM/DMO) the tools do the conversion and data migration. No need of DMC. We need to do pre-projects (e.g. CVI) and some post conversion tasks.

Hello Somraj,

  1. For New Implementation / Greenfield scenario - DMC can be used to migrate and convert data from the source SAP ECC to S/4HANA. Non-SAP systems' data also can be migrated and converted.
  2. For System Conversion / Brownfield scenario - existing SAP ECC is converted to S/4HANA; it's more like release upgrade. Yes, SUM/DMO tools do the conversion. DMO is needed only if SAP ECC has a anydb (non-SAP database). One of the advantages of System Conversion / Brownfield is existing business processes, customizing, transactional data and custom code is maintained.

Dear tuncay.karaca : I got all the answers for migration cockpit. Can you please give me some leads about RDS i.e. Using SAP Data Services (BODS).

Hi Somraj,

RDS (Rapid Deployment Solutions) for Data Migration that can be called RDM (Rapid Data Migration) which is basically a packaged solution that includes pre-configured content, best practices, etc. The core content of RDM is for SAP Data Services (BODS) which is as an ETL (Extract Transform Load) tool for ECC - S/4 Migration.

Using SAP Data Services (BODS) is a good option for Data Migration process; SAP Data Services is a proven tool for connect to systems, extract data, transform data, and load data to the target systems. You don't need RDM's packaged solutions; you can scope, design and develop all data migrations with SAP Data Services; though RDM's predeveloped objects can contribute in a way that helps exploring, validation for what needs to be done! Carefully you need to explore what RDM has been providing.

Here check: Rapid data migration to SAP S/4HANA
