Is there any way to recover a SAC model import job?

I was adding a new calculated measure to a model and after it rebuilt the import job is missing. I’m not clear why it has gone, I didn’t knowingly delete it. Is there any way to recover it. It was part of a very complex BW imported data model which combined data from 5 BW queries. I’ve attempted to recreate by importing the queries again and remapping the fields but it hasn’t been possible. It was a ‘live’ reporting model and so in the end I had to rebuild from scratch the model and then remap the associated stories to the new model, quite a task! I still have the original model and stories but without the model import job they are expensive scrap!

Hello clive_rouse3,

Find my explanation highlighted below:

I was adding a new calculated measure to a model and after it rebuilt the import job is missing. I’m not clear why it has gone, I didn’t knowingly delete it. Model rebuilding activity always take mode back to initial state (when it was created). If you start from blank model then system will reset model back to its initial state (without any import jobs). All the changes added later on are gone for good.

Is there any way to recover it. Unfortunately once your rebuilt a model you can not undo the changes/ reset step. Best practice is to take a backup before changing a model. Here are your options:

  • Create a copy of the model before performing change. Down side of this process is that if something goes wrong with original mode, you have to remap story to newly copied model.
  • In multi tenant setup - you can import back the object. But this means you need to manually keep track of changes. May not be good options when you are performing changes in Dev and you can not move pending changes to Production yet.
  • Best option is to take a local backup via Menu > Deployment > Export. If something goes wrong you can go back to previous version by importing the tgz file. This is what we follow in our projects. Import options lets you overwrite or you can delete the model and then import to get a clean version. Deletion is feasible if you do not have dependent stories attached with the model.

We can expect improvements this year (as per roadmap)

Hope this helps. Let us know if you have any query around this topic.

Thanks again Debjit for your very extensive response. What I still don’t understand is that I’ve previously changed this model adding additional queries etc and the import job has also been retained and updated after the rebuild. The deployment>export function looks like the way to go.

you are welcome.

When we add a new query/ import job we are not touching the core model. Hence no rebuilding required and reason why you still retain all queries.

When we add/remove dimensions model require rebuilding. This in turn resets the model.

Thanks,

Just FYI - A new enhancement is planned for Q2 2021 (~May 2021), that will let you remodel in wrangler without resetting the entire model. More flexibility are planned in coming releases. In short remodeling may not require rework in future and no more missing queries / import jobs.

Thank you, that was really helpful.

Could you point out more clearly where to find Menu > Deployment > Export? A screenshot would be very nice.

Thanks

Hi debjit.singha,

We work with SAC for a while now and we have different issues where models breaks. Creating each model from scratch is not an option when you have a lot of them. The best option that you mentioned (export/import) seems a good way for a backup. However, it was not recommended from another SAC colleague with the reason that whenever SAC gets a new update, importing old tgz file would probably not work. Is there any other option where we can have a reliable Backup for our stories and models?
