Did you mean:

the reference cell location cannot be found because its target doesn't exist anymore - WHY?

On some of my reports with reference cells, I get this error after it's been running for multiple instances. Generally about a week after its published:

the reference cell location cannot be found because its target doesn't exist anymore

I would understand if the referenced cell was gone, but when I dig into it I can see the data in the original cell. Why does it break?

Are there particular rules around where the reference cell is located?

References are connected to a cell and the specific data for the cell at the time it is setup. Sounds like you may be showing data for each day in the table to which your reference is connected. As you said, after about a week or so, perhaps the particular day to which the reference is connected no longer shows in the table, therefore breaking the reference.
