The use of CMOD for renaming data elements is possible only in an OnPrem system. With the 'Custom Fields and Logic' app you can use extensibility to add custom fields to the Manage Product Master App as you have found but the addition of custom fields to the material master is still not possible as its based on the OnPrem GUI transaction.
