Here's my Virtual Machine specs

  • Static hostname: vhcalnplci
  • Icon name: computer-vm
  • Virtualization: vmware
  • Operating System: Linux Mint 20
  • Kernel: Linux 5.4.0-59-generic
  • Architecture: x86-64
  • VM Memomry : 8gb
  • VM Processors: 8
  • VM HDD: 100gb
  • Network Adapter: Custom (VMnet0)

Notes: tried NAT; same error nogo; tried custom IP: 10.0.2.15 as per instructions given in Newbie Guide; exactly same error nogo. tried installing-reinstalling Linux-MintOS 3-times; nogo;

I am exactly following step-by-step as per newbie guide. etc/host files has been edited to reflect correct hostname/IP as follows:

  • 10.0.2.15 vhcalnplci vhcalnplci.dummy.nodomain

At terminal I am suing this command : sudo ./install.sh -k -g -s Yes, I had to use kgs switch otherwise, hostname check command in the script does not let you move forard and throws same stupid exception error "your hostname configured as loopback host bla bla bla.. "

Here's my terminal output after install script runs:

Oh! Wow wow wow, Finally, I have managed to install it successfully and make it work. ooh Hurray. I solved puzzle my-self. So here's what I did. Same specs as mentioned above, except for the following changes.

LESSON LEARNED:

  • I downloaded SAP AS 7.51 sp02 (earlier was trying on 7.50 sp02)
  • I was using VMware for virtual machine which does not give you very good choice for defining custom IP addressing, or at least I don't know how to do it in VMware.
  • So I tried same on oracle's VirtualBox, here It was breeze to define custom IP: 10.0.2.15 which is primary requirement for sap installation success. Most importantly it should ping successfully with the hostname : vhcalnplci
  • Followed exactly Newbie and concise guides.
  • Host OS: Win10,
  • Guest os: Linux-MintOS 20
  • And here's my screen-shots

Hello Hugo,

As far as I am aware, the syntax of the hosts file is:

10.0.2.15 vhcalnplci.dummy.nodomain vhcalnplci

After adjusting it, try runnint "hostname -f" and confirm that the FQDN is returned (hostname + domain).

Isaías

Hi Isaias Freitas, thanks for your reply. Here's my ongoing efforts as per your advice.

Updated /etc/hosts file as follows: -

--------------------------------------------------

# 127.0.0.1 localhost

# 192.168.235.135 vhcalnplci vhcalnplci.dummy.nodomain

10.0.2.15 vhcalnplci.dummy.nodomain vhcalnplci

# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts

::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback

fe00::0 ip6-localnet

ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix

ff02::1 ip6-allnodes

ff02::2 ip6-allrouters

------------------------------------------- > end of hosts

Here's my commands in terminal prompts in sequence :

gio@vhcalnplci:~$ reboot

gio@vhcalnplci:~$ sudo hostname

[sudo] password for gio:

vhcalnplci

gio@vhcalnplci:~$ ping vhcalnplci

PING vhcalnplci.dummy.nodomain (10.0.2.15) 56(84) bytes of data.

64 bytes from vhcalnplci.dummy.nodomain (10.0.2.15): icmp_seq=1 ttl=128 time=0.601 ms

64 bytes from vhcalnplci.dummy.nodomain (10.0.2.15): icmp_seq=2 ttl=128 ^C

gio@vhcalnplci:~$ sudo runnint "hostname -f"

sudo: runnint: command not found

gio@vhcalnplci:~$ hostname -f

vhcalnplci.dummy.nodomain

gio@vhcalnplci:~$ hostname

vhcalnplci

gio@vhcalnplci:/mnt/hgfs/sap751-sp02$ ./install.sh

The hostname you have chosen is either configured on a loopback device or not active on this server, please check your configuration and hostname selection. If you are confident about your choice of hostname, start the install script with -s flag to skip the hostname check.

gio@vhcalnplci:/mnt/hgfs/sap751-sp02$ ./install.sh

Then tried with -s -k -g switches :

gio@vhcalnplci:/mnt/hgfs/sap751-sp02$ ./install.sh -s -k -g

And here it stuck forever. I tried to cust and paste Access URL for GUI link in mozilla browser inside mint VM - NOGO; my internet is working.

And then I disabled the firewall by using

sudo ufw disable 'at termial prompt

and verified with

sudo ufw status 'at terminal prompt

At terminal prompt, my firewall is fully disabled now still NOGO. Browser does not populate with any page, show error.

Please advise what's wrong.

Side Note: I have observed inside shell script file install.sh - it is performing all pre-requisite checks such as ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES, HOSTNAMES CHECK, DNS NAME RESOLUTION CHECK, NETWORK , PROXY, IP etc. and finally, it is simply extracting huge .tar files with embedded pre-defined DIRECTORY structure for Sybase , and SAP and other dependency files. Not a big deal. I would say the automation install script is poorly designed or very restrictive. Because, there are many different flavors of Linux with end-less different ways to configure the same “shitt”. So one recipe doesn’t work for all.

If someone from team can kindly give manual method: listing each of those pre-requisites, environment variables, requirement and then .tar files can be manually extracted and those variable can be manually configured individually. Pretty much like SAP basis job. It might have been more practical and time saving. I am sure very few users “once in a blue moon” might have been successfully install rather than facing frustration.

Hello Hugo,

That prompt with the URL is expected.

It will never end on its own.

You must now copy the URL and open it (either from within the VM itself or from your real machine).

Now, it is curious that it did not work within the VM itself...

I assume that if you execute "ifconfig" (or "ip address show") you can see two interfaces (at least), right?

One for the loopback (127.0.0.1) and the actual network interface (10.0.2.15).

You can try to un-comment the line "127.0.0.1 localhost" at your hosts file too.

Isaías

Yes, Here's my terminal screenshot.

and here is pinging....

Here my /etc/hosts file.

As you can see in above screen shots, my physical Ethernet adapter provided by VMware; is ens32. this is the same virtual adapter which is created in host windows by VMWare to be used by guest OS Mint-Linux. VMware gives you different settings to choose; Bridged, NAT, Host-only, and Custom.

Sorry , copy paste screen shots not saved here, trying to attach screen-shots pics.

Hello Hugo,

The output from ifconfig does not show the IP address 10.0.2.15.

The local interface from your VM is 192.168.235.135.

You should fix that in the "hosts" file and try restarting the installation process.

Isaías

PS: only now I saw that you had already installed SAP successfully. Anyway, I believe that the above was the root cause...
