Hello there,

I have a client looking to migrate their SAP Estate to Azure (as a precursor to ultimately migrating to S/4HANA).

They are currently using multiple SAP Business suite component - on NW 7.4 on Oracle 11.2.0.4, on RHEL 6.4 - a OSDB combination supported as per the PAM.

However, as per the note 1928533 - SAP Applications on Azure, this combination is not supported on Azure. We have confirmed that the stack Oracle on RHEL is available and supported on Azure, which infers that this is a constraint from SAP.

Please can I inquire on why this constraint is in place?

I am obviously looking to avoid the additional complication (effort, risk, cost, time) that would be incurred by a heterogeneous platform migration.

Many thanks, Parag

Hello Parag

I have been in conversations with Microsoft lately and as you saw in note note 1928533, its not supported.

SAP is not very determined to have Netweaver certified on top of OracleLinux (and OracleDB)

Oracle doesnt want to support RHEL or SLES in Azure to promote their own cloud.

What Azure has is full SAP support on Windows/OracleDB (AWS doesnt have this), and apparently soon Azure will have the possibility to have Oracle installed on top of OracleLinux but without SAP, only for the DB. I dont know if this is an option for you.

summary, in Azure, its better to use Windows (situation in March 2017).

Regards, Mario
