one realm is HEADER data and the other is item data.. Think of it like this... Company Code is header and Plant or storage location (such as Partner data) is item level. Parent realm will hold General Global data, where child realm holds transaction data. There are also different reasons so user parent child realms.. such as how data is pushed into your system from your ERP, you can have it replicate from Parent to child or vice versa.. Also these realms help determine SYSTEM ID settings and are very helpful while using mulit-erp connections! Happy mapping!
