System copy from HANA 1.0 to HANA 2.0

Hi Experts,

We have current SAP Systems (Business Suite on HANA) running on SAP HANA Database 1.0 SP12(OS - SLES 11) and add on/plug in LCAPPS. We are looking to migrate to new Hardware and simultaneously upgrade SAP HANA Database from 1.0 SP12 to latest HANA Database 2.0 SP05. Currently we are planning to install similar version i.e. SAP HANA 1.0 SP12(latest patch) on new hardware on latest OS SLES 15SP2 and perform a system copy using backup restore to build our SAP systems (SoH) on the targe tHANA 1.0 SP12 Database, which is supported and later upgrade it to SAP HANA 2.0 SP05.

My question is can I directly install SAP HANA 2.0 SP05 and restore HANA 1.0 SP12 backups to the same which I read is supported however not sure if I can perform System copy for current SAP systems onto the said HANA 2.0 SP05 on new HW/OS using SWPM. Has anyone performed similar scenarios and kindly list the challenges faced. This approach will save the HANA 2.0 upgrade at a later stage and have everything tested before GoLive.

Also it would be really helpful if you can redirect me to supporting SAP Documentation on System copy from HANA 1.0 SP12 to HANA 2.0 SP05.

As usual thanks in advance to the community for answering the concerns and queries.

Regards,

Hi Vijish,

the short answer is YES you can 🙂 The workflow / process could look like the following:

1. Upgrade your existing HANA 1.0 installation to the latest HANA 1.0 revision (not always mandatory, but recommended)

2. Execute the Mandatory Preparation Steps for Upgrading a SAP HANA 1 System to SAP HANA 2 as described in SAP Note 2372809

3. Take a full backup of your HANA 1.0 instance (store it on external devices/backup library...)

4. Re-install your server with new OS SLES 15.x or similar

5. Install a new HANA 2.0 instance (now MDC)

6. Load the backup taken from the HANA 1.0 instance into the tenant of the HANA 2.0 instance.

For further information please read also the following SAP notes:

  • 1948334 - SAP HANA Database Update Paths for SAP HANA Maintenance Revisions
  • 2732756 - SAP HANA Platform Update and Migration from 1.0 to 2.0
(Please check out the attached PDF document --> see Chapter 3.8.2 Backup/Recovery)

Of course the above mentioned step list is only a draft proposal. Please adapt this list to your needs and test carefully the upgrade procedure.

Best regards,

The way I did it was a 2 phase approach.

Phase 1. Hardware OS upgrade then HANA installed with the same revision. I used HANA system replication to migrate the DB. see note 1984882. Backup and restore works as well but takes more time. We waited a few months to stabilize then started the SPS05 upgrades.

Phase 2. In place upgrade to HANA SPS05.

I would highly recommend Getting HANA Cockpit installed and all your HANA systems added. HANA Cockpit has more capabilities than HANA Studio.

Hope this helps.

Hi bryan.bingay

Thanks for your response, there is system replication enabled already in the Prod system hence with system replication will have to add another tier I believe for migration hence considering database backup and restore, also with the source and target on different network/environments will have to see if system replication would be possible.

Did you perform system copy using SWPM as well once HANA DB was ready on target Hardware, could you please suggest the high level steps and any challenges you faced.

We have HSR, (HANA System Replication) in PROD and QA as well. I decided not to add another tier and risk affecting PROD and QA negatively. I used Backup restore for QA and PROD and HSR for SBX and DEV. I don't think you need to use SWPM, it should work performing the backup and recovery from either HANA Studio or HANA Cockpit or 3rd party supported backup tool. I used our 3rd party backup tool to preform the system copy to the new hardware and HANA install.

The best advice I can give you is to set up a HANA lab that is identical to what you are going to move to and test; to make sure it does what you want and the data is protected so there is not data loss.

Cheers

Hi Vijish ,

as per PAM you can backup and recovery between HANA 1.0 SP12 to HANA 2.0 SP05

just making sure follow prep/post steps, in the target ( prepare similar landscape -->services ) before restore . refer OS specific KBAs install required packages/ RPMs( RHEL), open required ports and EPM-MDS(post step for my case for InA) installation ect.

2469025 - How-To: Upgrading to SAP HANA 2.0

2372809 - Mandatory Preparation Steps for Upgrading a SAP HANA 1 System to SAP HANA 2

1. Check for orphaned persistence files

2. Create a full backup

3. Check space separation and column store format

4. Check for unfinished garbage collection

5. Upgrade to SAP HANA 2

Once restore is complete do the below steps from the application server

prepare default profile according to new new HDB host Setup and run Env. Secstore command to connect new HDB destination run R3trans -d ( 0000) Since SAP HANA 2.0 supports both XS Classic and XS Advanced, a simultaneous migration is not required.

Transition to SAP HANA Cockpit 2.0 Install EPM-MDS plugin - providing the InformationAccess Service (InA/MDS-service) With SAP HANA 2.0, the InformationAccess Service (InA) is no longer part of the server installation. Instead it is now provided by a plugin which has to be installed and updated in addition to the server component.

This service is required by analytic clients, such as BusinessObjects Analysis for Microsoft Excel, BusinessObjects Design Studio or SAP Analytics Cloud.

Please note, that the EPM-MDS plugin is currently only available on SAP HANA 2.0 SPS01 and later.

Hi Shankar,

Thanks a lot for providing the detailed answer, I am planing to install DBA Cockpit on new environment for HANA DB Administration however I havent come across EPM-MDS plugin yet (thanks for providing the relevant notes). Is this mandatory to be installed with SAP HANA DB 2.0 SP05. We do use Business Objects 4.2 SP4 with HANA 1.0 SP12 currently. please let me know your thoughts.
