Is it possible to upgrade a S4/HANA fully-activated appliance to another?

Hello Experts,

we are currently facing issues while trying to work with HCM on our S4/Hana System.

We are using a S4/Hana 1809 FPS00 fully-activated appliance on premise. Unfortunately demo processes for HCM are not available for this Release.

As far as I know demo processes for HCM are available with the 1909 FPS02 fully-activated appliance.

So my question is:

Is it possible to upgrade our 1809 fully-activated-appliance to a 1909 FPS02 fully-activated appliance on our own? And if so, what would be the necessary steps to do it?

Hi Barry,

apologies for the late reply due to vacation.

Technically an upgrade might be possible (we do it as well SAP-internally when creating a new appliance release), however, depending on your license state you might experience issues e.g. when downloading HANA add-ons, etc. since the Maintenance Planner takes your customer/partner state as basis. Maybe try to generate your stack XMLs and decide based on the result ?

Also, during the upgrade you will need to fix certain situations (SPAM/SPAU, CDS views...). There's no dedicated support for upgrading the appliance, so you might be a bit left on community support and SAP notes.

Wrt. HCM: yes, a scenario has been added in 1909 FPS02. If you don't created too many new things in your 1809 instance, maybe getting the 1909 FPS02 might be the easier option ?

thanks for your answere. I already informed myself about the general upgrade to 1909 but I couldn't find any hints about the demo processes that are coming with fully-activated-appliances.

But what is most important is if the demo processes for SAP HCM do come with it.

As I sad we are currently working with a 1809 fully-activated-appliance, but the demo processes for HCM are only available with the 1909 FPS02 fully-activated-appliance release..

Do you know if the upgrade of fully-activated-appliances is similar to the upgrade of regular S4/HANA Systems?

To be honest, I wouldn't expect demo processes for HCM

What you could do is check the best practices explorer at https://rapid.sap.com/bp/#/browse/categories/lines_of_business/areas/human_resources (logon required) to see if that helps you
