SAP Analytics Cloud: Rolling 12 months Year on Year Variance

So we had a request to have a chart that shows rolling 12 months. (currently from August 2020 back to August 2019)

This was fairly simple to do using a dynamic filter to look back 12 months from current period.

The difficulty I'm having is that anything outside of that range to all intents and purposes does not exist. So I can do a month to month variance (although the variance for August 2019 shows as "-") but if I wanted to compare July 2020 to July 2019 I get "-" as well when I'm doing a variance to previous year.

Is there a better way to do rolling 12 months with a year on year variance?

Maybe a calculated measure can help... but it's hard to tell without some more details.
Please provide example screenshot, especially would need to know if your version and account/measure dimensions are in rows or columns, because there are some known limitations:

w what I want is to have a variance from each month of this year to the same month in the previous year. But all I get when I set up the variance is "-"
