SAP Marketing Cloud - Employee Segmentation



We are looking to use segmentation in Marketing Cloud for internal communication (mainly employee emails and calls). Can Employee be used for segmentation, or do we need to create a contact for each employee in order to use segmentation? if we have to create the employees as contacts then how can we differentiate the contact as employee? if we plan to interface ECC employee data to maintain this information can we use any API / CPI mapping?

Pls help...
