BO Publication Slowness

Hi,

We have BO Publication with Source reports as WebI and Dynamic recipient as WebI report which has around 8000 rows.

The reason of having Dynamic recipient Webi report is we have section on Store ID in main report which should generate separate mhtml file for each section so that is why we wnet with Publication.

But we are facing performance issue with Publication which is running for around 3hrs.

In our BO 4.2 SP6 Server multiple Publication are running concurrently and we are facing slowness.

We have Distributed the APS server as SAP suggested still we cannot see improvemnt. Normal reports are running within 6 minutes.

Need expert advise on how we can increase the performance

Is the publication sending the reports via email or to user Inbox.? You mentioned reports running under 6 min, does it mean the reports in the publication?

Hi Jawahar, Thanks for the response.

Yes both the reports which we have used in the Publication are running within 6 mins.

The Publication are generating mhtml files which are placed in particular path through File system.

    8000 recipients, 6 minutes per report = 800 hours :)

On a serious note -- you need to do a sizing exercise : https://wiki.scn.sap.com/wiki/display/BOBJ/Sizing+and+Deploying+SAP+BusinessObjects+BI+4.x+Platform+and+Add-Ons

You haven't provided any details on your architecture, so there is nothing to review/discuss otherwise.

    HI Denis,

We have increase the hardware and now we have 6 CPUs and 32GB RAM.

You are getting me wrong. We are using Dynamic recipient as Webi report in Publication to generate mhtml files based on each section in main report .

Please let me know for more details.

How is your publication setup for report bursting method? One DB fetch for all receipents or one db fetch for each recipient?

or it may be the format is taking more time , try running a simple report with mthml format and excel format?

    • 60 files - 10 minutes
8000 files - 1333 minutes if it was scaling linearly
So the publication actually works with parallel processing etc.

Number of CPU's and RAM doesn't tell anything without knowing architecture and env usage...
Please do review materials in the link I provided. Proper sizing exercise will help you improve performance.

When you run the publication you can enable trace and see in the logs where the time is spent and dig down from there (tacing will slow things down as well).
You can also monitor CPU, Memory , Disk i/o ,network bandwidth and DB activity during publication run to see where the bottleneck is.
If you're on VM, you will need to use root level access to hardware that runs VM's to see this as inside VM those things will be skewed.

as I said earlier, it may be format issue or destination issue. Please test the publication in test mode for couple of recipients in different formats and different destnations? See what is the root cause.

    • But our requirement is to have mhtml files and in particular path.. how to handle this. Actually we were having DeskI reports in BO 3.1 with VBA macro which was exporting the report in html files. so it achieve that scenario we came up with Publication.

Yes the performance is due to no. of files generation. How to handle thii type of scenario. Any suggestions.

it may be the latency between the drive you are seing to between BO server and Netwrok location. Not necessarily it is BO issue.

That is why I am asking to run a simple test, to see what is the bottleneck in your scenario.

Yes, it is the time taking to send to network drive. It is the lag. You may need to work with your network team to improve the latency between BO and Network share drive.
