Regarding cross skilling in MDG

Hi all, I have 10+ years of experience in SAP SD and planning to get cross skilled in SAP MDG. Would it be a suitable line of learning for someone with SAP SD functiional knowledge? Or is it necessary to have technical understanding [ABAP/Workflow?]
