Will variance dependency affect globle characteristics in other materials?

Dear experts,

I'm a green hand in SAP. There are two characteristics("length" and "weight" ) in our company's sap and they are all globle characteristics, they will get their values from 3D models.

Now I create a material and make this material as a configurable profile, this two characteristics are included in this material(I put them in class 300). I want to use variant dependency function to creat relationships between these two characteristics(weight=lengthx20+10).

My question is will this dependency affect other materials? Because these two characteristics will be used in other materials, and they will get their values from 3D models. I'm worried that create a variant dependency for these two characteristics will change the rule in the whole system.

Thanks and best regards!

    zhou Truman,

If you create a dependency ex. procedure with syntax $SELF.weight= (($SELF.length * 20)+10) and assign it to configuration profile of configurable material it will not affect the values in other parts where this characteristics are used.

If you attach a dependency at characteristic level it self it will become active for what ever places its attached.
