Material Class - Creating Sub Tabs for Different kinds of Characteristics

Hi all, I know how to create sub tabs to group different characteristic fields under different grouping via the material master. My questions are:

1. Are there any other ways to do this? i.e. not from the material master? Reason why I am asking this is for a production go-live, I would need to set up the groupings and then followed by the migration of materials.

2. Related to data migration, how are the characteristic fields being populated if they are assigned under different groupings? Do we just migrate the value to the characteristic fields in the material master and the system does not need to know the groupings?

You create the tabs by assigning characteristics to characteristic groups.
