When to activate Material Number Length Extension in S/4 HANA Conversion

As Per Note 2267140 “It is possible to switch on the extended material number functionality later in S/4 HANA System Conversion project”
So what’s the recommendation whether to activate material number functionality with 40 Charc. in the beginning of project or if do this later then what are the effort and additional activity required? Please share your experiences.
