Cannot create lanes in Solution Manager 7.2 BPMN diagram

In a Collaboration Diagram, when I click on Lanes in the Palette, I do not see any lanes listed except N/A. The '+' button for adding new lanes is also grayed-out. I tried alternatively creating the new role through the Diagram Entities menu item which is displayed on clicking the tiny button on the top right corner of the screen. But the Create button is also grayed-out.

My questions are:

1. Where does the list of lanes pull data from on clicking the lane button in the pallette.

2. Why can I not create a new lane/role there? What permission/authorization do I need for it?

3. Why can't I create a new role from the Diagram Entities menu option?What permission/authorization do I need for it?

I hope someone can help me with this since I have spent already a lot of time looking for a solution. Picture attached.
