CPU Architecture "Intel Cascade Lake R" Certified by SAP?

Hi Team

We are SAP Customer, and have implemented SAP HANA in our company some years ago.

We are planning to Virtualize SAP HANA system for which we need to buy Certified Appliance as per your Certified and Supported SAP HANA® Hardware Directory website.

When buying Certified Appliance, we also need to make sure that CPU Architecture is Certified and meets our requirements as well (load/perf. etc.,).

I noticed that, on the above website under CPU Architecture, “Intel Cascade Lake SP” is listed but NOT “Intel Cascade Lake R

Intel Cascade R is Launch in February 2020 and has better specs comparatively with other Microarchitectures.

  1. I want to know, whether this is Certified or not by SAP?
  1. What does SAP recommends its Customers when buy recently launched Intel Microarchitectures?
  1. Is it OK to buy and implement SAP HANA on it, although it’s not given on Certified and Supported SAP HANA® Hardware Directory website.

Request you to reply.

Hi Qadeer,

Intel's cascade lake is micro-architecture . It has many core series (cascade lake X,W,SP, AP and now R) segregated for their purposes . For example, Core cascade lake W for workstations, cascade lake X for desktops, cascade lake SP for server scalable ,cascade lake AP for server advanced processor.

Of these, as of now only core (Cascade lake) SP is certified for SAP Productive environment. Cascade lake R which is contemporary of SP is not yet certified .

I think it's not going to be certified for server usage because :

Cascade Lake R only targets mainstream entry and mid-range servers and therefore only support up to 2-way multiprocessing ( not sufficient for high performing server usage) , where as Cascade lake SP support up to 8-way multiprocessing.

For your queries :

  1. Cascade lake R is not yet certified.
  2. IMO they certify the new processors after close lab tests. Also, the specific recommendations are mentioned in the RIN notes of the products. For example, SAP clearly recommended only Intel's Haswell or later processors for HANA 2.0 ; Cascade lake SP or later for persistence memory feature of HANA 2 SP 03.
  3. If it's not a huge and mission critical installation( mid level non-productive systems), you can opt with uncertified hardware too.
