Hi,

The first question to ask is whether you want to go for a conversion of the existing SAP environment or a new implementation.

There are some restrictions when doing ECC 6 conversion to S4HANA, such as...

  • it's not possible to migrate directly from SAP R/3 to SAP S4HANA;
  • no additional ledgers can be introduced during S4HANA conversion (besides technical activation of leading ledger if you hadn't activated SAP GL yet in ECC 6);
  • no additional splitting criteria can be introduced during S4HANA conversion;
  • etc.

This makes process re-design harder when doing ECC 6 conversion to S4HANA. And the reality is that there are quite some SAP customers which have implemented SAP years ago and didn't activated SAP GL etc. later on. And with the move to S4HANA there's an opportunity to take advantage of the latest functionalities.

You have to meet the prerequisites when doing ECC 6 conversion to S4HANA, such as...

  • transactional data tables have to be consistent (you'll be amased how many SAP customers have inconsistencies due to bad developments with direct inserts or changes in database table directly or manual changes in database table etc.);
  • asset accounting and general ledger have to be reconciled;
  • etc.

The choice how to move to S4HANA should be analysed thoroughly. Key questions you want to ask when deciding on the right transition scenario:

  • Do you want to keep your solution enhancements or your transaction data history?
  • Does your system fulfill all conversion prerequisites?
  • Do you need a phased business rollout?
  • Do you need a renewal of your complete ERP solution?
  • How do you perceive your current system?

If you want to get more information on migration and conversion to S4HANA, there are some very good OpenSAP courses available (and free of charge). The questions you're asking are addressed in detail in these OpenSAP courses.
