Importing the enterprise glossary

We are investigating a way of work that will allow us to keep the PowerDesigner glossary in sync with an externally maintained glossary.

Using Excel imports (named reference), we are able to achieve the following.

  • -Importing categories
  • -Importing renamed categories (not in category hierarchy)
  • -Importing category hierarchies
  • -Importing renamed category (in hierarchy and associated terms)
  • -Importing terms
  • -Importing terms linked to category hierarchy
  • -Importing terms moved between category hierarchies

Items that does not seem to be supported

  • -Importing renamed terms (duplicate term is created with same code)
  • -Importing deleted categories (deleted items are not removed)
  • -Importing deleted terms (deleted items are not removed)

Are this the best we should expect when basing our workflow on Excel imports?

The Excel Import can only help you up to a point, Johan. If you could import into an empty Glossary and then merge it into the existing one that would be good, but that isn't possible.

You'll need a script to process the Excel file. I started writing one for a client a couple of years ago (they wanted to import and update Glossary Terms from Collibra) - not sure if I finished it.

Please get in touch if you want to talk about it.

Thank you for the answer George, I suspected that you would need to script the more advanced updates.

    I will contact you
