Variant Configuration for Sub Assembly (SAP PP)

Hi there,

Hope you are doing well. I have a client who deals in Apparel Business and as per their needs they manufacture variants of same products. The variants of the product can be distinguished with color. For example, Black or Blue shirt.

My case is that I've turned variant configuration on for Finished Goods and in Super BOM I've two different Fabrics (i.e Black and Blue SFG's) with OD maintained. These two are maintained in seperate code because of their color composition. Is there anyway that I can open Variant Configuration on these two sub assemblies as well and avoid creating two different material codes for SFG's. The whole scenario should be triggered by giving configuration parameters for FG material only in Sales Order.

Your respone is highly appreciated.

Hello Hammad Momin , the simple answer to your question is yes. What you are describing is called multilevel configuration and it is very common. The below link will get you started but you can also search "sap variant configuration multilevel" and read up on it.

The basics are, make sure your top level FG material has multilevel BOM explosion checked in the configuration profile and your SFG's should be KMAT's as well. When setting values on the SFG's

(getting FG parameters) you will want to use the syntax prefix of $Parent or $Root instead of $Self.

    Hammad Momin,

My 2 penny here , i will go with option suggested by Andrew Engfehr. It will help you minimal maintenance if you see more color options adding into your product catalog.

    Hello Hammad,

This is a common "ask" when we implement SAP for Textiles or Garments Industry ( without AFS).

    1) Here we need to use Configurable material at both levels ( SFG and FG)

    2) Create a Simple BOM with OD.

    3) Write an OD(Procedure) to copy the values from the FG to SFG

    4) When you built your BOM You will have only one component called "Fabric"

    5) This will eliminate your Huge component maintenance since the fabric color or shade number will be dynamic and keep changing as new season comes up( Re-occurrence of same shade or color is very rare in MTO scenario)

I am also attaching a simple pic for better illustration.

Have you find any solution ? Check this one .

Create SFG material for thread with colour as characteristic .it should be batch manged configurable material. Create CIR (MD81) for thread & create stock .

Create dashboard where Use Function Module to search batch based on the characteristics and Transfer the SFG batch from CIR to Sales Order as per requirement manually by can read the batch characteristic value with FM QC01_BATCH_VALUES_READ.You can also fetch the sales order characteristics with FM ME_VAR_GET_CLASSIFICATION. After assignment of all thread to available customer requirement then balance production order of T-Shirts to be analyse and again CIR to be raise collectively for balance requirement.

    Hi Hammad

What i understand that sales order will create for material Code "T-Shirt" with characteristic Colour having value May be "Red" "Blue" etc. BOM will select the thread material code according to the characteristic colour in SO.

If above is your requirement then i would suggest to use class 200 In BOM item thread .plz refer following Link for the implementation of class 200.

    • Hi P Puri,

      Thanks for your reply.

My requirement is slightly different from the above scenario. Let me explain it to you.

For example, One material "T-Shirt" has two colors and for these two colors we have two cut fabric as SFG.

We don't want to open two material codes for these two SGF's becuase client has opened them just because of the color and rest of the things are same. Is the possible in standard variant configuration that we open only one SFG and differentiate it on the basis of color. Again, requirement will be entered on sales order for FG not SFG.
