multiple item codes for one item

Would it be possible to create multiple item codes for the same item and have the linked to one parent item. Therefor they would all show same available stock,cost prices, everything as the the main item.

When using one of these items on an invoice, the stock value would change on all of them to what the main parent item is.

Almost the same principle as alternative items, the only difference is that the user wouldn't have to remember to go find the alternative item. this way it would appear as if it was a normal item.
