Portal iView Height Issue After Chrome Update to v76

Matt_Fraser

We recently deployed an update for Google Chrome to v76, and since then users are complaining that Training and Events Management pages (PV7I and PV8I) are not formatting correctly in our Enterprise Portal. The issue is exactly as described in KBA 2836978 v1 (iView height not opening in full page in Google Chrome v76), but unfortunately the workarounds described in the KBA are not working for us.

I have tried changing the "Height Type" property from "Full Page" to "Automatic" as described in the KBA for both the affected iViews and their associated Pages, but it does not change the behavior. In Portal Content Management, when previewing the iView it displays correctly, but previewing the Page exhibits the error. I have also changed the "Isolation Method" for the Page from "Embedded" to "URL," as I understand the Height Type only takes effect with URL Isolation Method (the Isolation Method for the iView was already defaulted to "URL").

As a fallback, I tried the end-user workaround of toggling the Tray Toggle button on the Page between closed and open, and this sometimes works, and often does not. The final workaround we discovered is to click the "Option" drop-down menu and select "Open in New Window," which opens the Page in a new browser tab and does not exhibit any height type issues.

Also note that the error only occurs with Chrome v76. It does not occur in earlier versions of Chrome, and it does not occur with other browser platforms (e.g. Firefox). However, we have Chrome distributed as our default browser to thousands of users across the organization, and due to security concerns with earlier versions of Chrome we were forced to push out the update to v76. Downgrading is not an option.

Our Portal is running NetWeaver Java 7.5 sps15 with SAPJVM 8 pl57 and kernel 753 pl401. Our backend ECC system is running ERP 6.0 EhP8 sps10 on NetWeaver ABAP 7.5 sps11 with kernel 753 pl400 (sapwebgui pl400 as well).

I've submitted a Customer Incident to SAP and they are looking into it, but I'm curious if others have encountered this issue as well, and if so did the workaround work for you? Otherwise, I'll update here with any developments we learn as we work the Incident with SAP.

Cheers,
Matt

Hi all,

Just an update to this problem, Google have pushed out a new build (Chrome 78.0.3904.70 it is for me) which this issue is fixed. Updating the Google Chrome to the latest version will solve this problem. Our KBA 2836978 has also been updated to reflect this news

Best regards,

Nick

Thanks for all the updates, Nick. We're looking into all the various patches and settings changes required across our landscape to make Chrome 78 work, and developing a rollout plan with our Client Management Team. Unfortunately, we have a number of critical enterprise applications with web UIs that all have to play well, and Chrome is not making this easy to coordinate.

Hi Matt,

Just to let you know Google have got back to us and they have fixed this issue in the latest beta version of Chrome.

I have already updated the KBA with the relevant info:

2836978 - iView height not opening in full page in Google Chrome v76 and later

Best regards

Nick

Thanks, Nick. I saw that in the Incident, your KBA, and also in the Chromium bug report. We were hoping Google would push out the fix as a patch to v76, rather than having to wait for the full upgrade to v78. We're aware of the other issues that v78 will introduce for our SAP landscape, specifically those mentioned in Notes 2781622 and 2754651, so I'm going to work with our Client Management Team to introduce the Group Policy changes as part of the v78 rollout when it becomes available, and also to apply the various patches and updates for WebGUI, Portal, FLP, etc, throughout our landscape.

More work for the weary!

Hi Matt,

We have already raised a ticket with Google concerning this issue. You can find the ticket here and reasons for the strange behaviour:

https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=1004105

The workaround of changing from Full Page Height Type to Automatic (URL Isolation Method must be used as you mention) works well with certain iViews (e.g: the UWL)) I've tested but it seems your iViews might be adjusting the height differently.

We will update the KBA 2836978 when we have an update/correction concerning this issue.

Best regards,

Nick

Thanks Nick. I see that Michal has updated our Incident with the same information (though he didn't link the Google ticket, so thank you for that).

Hi Folks,

Is this issue resolved as I am also facing the same issue in Google Chrome. Current version of Google Chrome is "Version 117.0.5938.92 (Official Build) (64-bit)"

In MS Edge iView height is taking automatically as per page but in chrome it is taking the exact height which is there in iView property "com.sap.portal.iview.initIframeHeight: 150"

Please suggest what can be the issue.

Regards,

Rohit Gera

Hello Rohit,

This issue was resolved four years ago with Chrome v78. Today, we are running chrome v116 throughout our organization without any issue, and we are also beta-testing Chrome v118 right now, and there is no issue in that version either.

Of course, in the intervening four years we have also kept pretty rigorously up-to-date with all of the major kernel patches and SAPUI5 updates. We update our kernel patch as well as Java components four times per year (to the major patch revision with Java systems, and with patches to the current support pack level for Java components), and we update the Java major support package stack level annually. Similarly, we patch the backend ABAP system four times a year with kernel (to the latest dw minor patch level) and SAP_UI / NW_GWFND support packs, plus UI5 and NWBC ABAP Runtime patches as warranted during those quarterly maintenances, and the major support package stack level annually.

Cheers,
Matt
