What is BPC? What are BPC's components, functionalities, dependencies, and how do they work?

Good afternoon all,

From my knowledge of reading through various articles and browsing through the forum, I understand that BPC means - Business Planning and Consolidation. It's a tool used to support all operational and financial activities in an organization. I know there are two platforms: 1) NetWeaver and 2) Microsoft Excel, but I'm not sure of the differences and their features.

If anyone could please build on top of my current understanding and further elaborate onward in detail to answer my questions (below), I would greatly appreciate it!

SAP Business Planning and Consolidation, version for the Microsoft platform - is using Microsoft Analysis Services as OLAP engine, not Excel.
