How to make Sites, Stores and Units catalog aware. (online and staged version)

How to make websites, stores and corresponding units catalog aware? Same concept like staged and online version of content catalog, we hope to implement staged and online version for websites, stores and corresponding units. Currently we only have website ( with online version of content catalog and product catalog) -> stores -> units mapping.
