How does synchronization works exactly?

1. What is the background process and how it exactly works? Does synchronization process use ModelService or maybe some other mechanism for that kind of operations?

2. How does it (that mechanism) copy data between two elements during synchronization (for example Products)?

I have already checked https://wiki.hybris.com/display/release5/Synchronization+Guide but i didn't find any solution.
