How to customize the catalog synchronization

I want to customize the catalog synchronization , I understand that DefaultCatalogSynchronizationService is the I have to override. I want to know - what are all the steps underneath cron job is doing ..? (The source is not provided for this/I dont know which java class is doing what) Can someone from hybr provide some light on it ?
