SAP HANA (basic questions)

I know the SAP B/W does not have to be used with HANA. Having said that, how does HANA identify tables to be used by the reporting/bi tools? Is is through the views that are created through HANA studio (does studio have to be used or something else?)? Is it possible to query directly against the SAP tables residing in HANA without creating views?
