WAIT UP TO n SECONDS. Is that really the best option when waiting for a result of update task?

Oh yes, I can execute SET UPDATE TASK LOCAL before that, but what if the functionality is starting another SAP LUW inside? Then SET UPDATE TASK LOCAL doesn't work and I need to have waiting loop after my functionality to get some document number etc. (result of finished update task). Isn't there any better and more elegant solution? Thanks
