Design Portal System Landscape

Hello Everybody,

I do not know where to post this query. My query is about the System Landscape design.

1. How should we design system landscape for the SAP Enterprise Portal Implementation? I know, we need to have a sandbox, a development system, a QA System and a production system. Are there any more systems needed other than these?

2.Do we need to have multiple instances of the above mentioned systems like 3 instances of QA System (QAR, QAS etc,) or like 2 instances of a Dev system (DEV, DVS etc). I am confused.

I am not clear on how to propose a portal system landscape solution or design.

I would appreciate much for any suggestion in this regard.

Hi Leena,

There are a couple of things that you should look at when planning a portal landscape. First the portal is going to be used to display information from different back-end systems like ERP. You portal landscape should be similar to the landscape for your backend systems. So if you have a development, QA and production system for ERP then you probably want a similar landscape for the portal.

I have seen where some organizations have two or three development or test systems. You may or may note need a portal for each. In a case like that you just have to ask "does it make sense"

Do you have a training system for the other back end systems? If so you may need a portal for training purposes.

You may also want a portal to practice upgrades etc. with.

I suggest that you read technical infrastructure document for NW2004s. It answers most of your queries

Hardware/Software reqmnts of Dev Portal

Hardware/Software reqmnts of QA Portal

Hardware/Software reqmnts of Prod Portal

Load balancing, High availability, Scalability, Concurrent users, Named Users, business content, Security considerations, SSO procedures etc..

System Design will be build based on the above reqmnts from Customer..

If you had a requirement that was like, "We need to be able to support an upgrade of the backend system and make sure that the portal works while continuing to perform work on the existing backend.", then you might have a need for multiple QA installs.

Hello Eric,

Our business requirement is to integrate SAP Systems like SRM, BI, R3, SCM etc and other non SAP Systems like RRTS, MARS, Siebel CRM etc with the NW04s Portal.

There are about 2000 Active users approximately who would be using this portal.

Could you please suggest the landscape design now. How do we go about doing the design?

I don't see a need for anything beyond dev, qa, prod but the requirements aren't very detailed.

It all depends on what the end goal is. What business requirements are you trying to support?
