SAP Contact Centre - removing a report server from Model

Hello again. Sorry to be asking yet another question. One day, I might know enough to answer one!! 🙂

My question today is complicated: due to a major infrastructure issue, I've recently had to restore my SAP Contact Centre system to an older version. Unfortunately, this coincided with my having rebuilt the Reporting Server elements *in the time between failure and restore*. So, my restore of app and db servers have a model.wim that refers to a Report Server that I have since deleted. The reason I deleted and recreated that Report Server was because, despite following all the advice for deleting OLAP cubes, etc. I could never get it to work from the outset. So I got rid of it and created a new one which then worked fine. I did not add the new Reporting Server into the model.wim for the app/db servers but rather a separate model.wim on the Reporting server with 2 VUs included only- one for reporting and one for standard reports. It is easy for me to resurrect both old and new Report Servers in their entirety. I'm just unsure of how it affects the application and database servers and the model.wims on those servers if I do. Ideally, I'd like to get rid of the Reporting Server VUs from the App/DB server model.wims. I was thinking of just resurrecting the old (broken) Reporting Server and then deleting its VUs from the model.wim on the App and DB server (I don't think I can cleanly delete the VUs unless the Report Server exists, right?). After that, I would decommission the broken Reporting Server. I could then, either rebuild the Reporting Server or resurrect the one that I had working before the DR incident. (Probably just rebuild). Does this sound like a sensible plan?

My problem, I think, is that I don't have a full understanding of the precise use of the model.wim. I also am unclear about how the Report Server hooks into the main database server - if at all. And obviously the Report Server is referenced in several VUs but, assuming there are no name changes to the server or databases, this shouldn't be a problem... ? Any guidance on how this all fits together would be most appreciated.

I realise this is all a bit of a convoluted question/scenario but any advice is most gratefully accepted.

Adèle

Hello Adele,

this is quite broad question and I am not sure I have fully got the problem - I am not sure why you did not include the reporting VUs to the full model. I am thinking of only one reason - you have no HAC installed on the Report server and you have done installation from IA locally.

Is that right?

Now you are right that understanding WIM file use is a key thing :-). SAP has quite nicely updated the documentation (

https://help.sap.com/doc/0b290317635c4a2090fe6a2099d1c4b3/7.0/en-US/SAP_CCtr_Advanced_Training_Confi...

).

There is a picture on page 133, which explains the use: WIM file is maintained with IA and sent to HAC nodes. The HAC services itself maintain installation info in own files (hacmodel_<nodename>.xml). So the WIM is kind of "recipe" and HAC service is a "cook" who read this recipe and do what is necessary. Read also page 49.

The WIM file itself is not used for starting/stopping services, this is actually stored in the hacmodel*.xml file on each server.

The WIM file itself neither show the real landscape and configuration, it shows how it should be. The ultimate setup and configuration is then in registry settings, jobs parameters, IIS website configurations and so on. So if you have in background changed the report server installation itself, then you may not be able to remove the VU from IA. There are uninstall scripts executed which will expect the DB installed - and it will fail.

So recreating the original VUs, deleting, and installing new VUs is a first step I would take.

However, if this fails, you may end up manually editing the WIM file (trimming off the VUs). Before that, you should delete any references to the VU from other VUs.

Not sure if this helps...

Best regards,

Dawood

Hello Dawood,

I just realised that I didn't respond to this answer of yours. Very sorry. It was completely the right answer (of course!) and I took you advice and recreated the original VUs and then deleted and reinstalled them. This worked perfectly. Thank you for the links and explanations - these really helped with my understanding of the setup. Much appreciated as always. Best wishes, Adèle
