Unable to apply SPS15 for Portal and KMC to JDW

Former Member

I am trying to apply SP Stack 15 to Java Developer Workplace, which has been installed from the NW SR1 DVDs with Portal and KMC. The support package for SAP WEB AS Java has completed successfully.

In the next step, to patch Portal, I have to extract the SAR files EP6CTRL15_0-10002786.SAR, EP6TOOLS15_0-20000394.SAR and EP6PORTAL15_0-20000394.SAR and run sapinst again. However, after starting sapinst, I do not see the option for installing the Portal patch for SPS15. How do I complete the patches for Portal and KMC?

Thanks,

Martin Ceronio

The problem I described here is when I extract the relevant files on top of the already extracted files for J2EE.

However, when I extract only the relevan SAR files as per the SPS15 guide, and then run sapinst, I get the following error:

"An error occurred during the installation of component SAP Enterprise Portal 6.0 Update Installation. Press the log view button..." etc.

Hi Martin,

What errors are there in the logs? (sapinst.log, sapinst_dev.log in c:\program files\sapinst_instdir)

Hi Jane,

I've cleaned out the sapinst_instdir a couple of times now while trying out different things. The error had something to do with not being able to find a particular file.

Have you gone through this process? Please confirm whether I have done the right thing:

After applying the SAP WEB AS Java patch, I extract the SAR files for the Portal into the same directory where the J2EE SPS15 files are. Then I start up sapinst again.

When you do this, do you get an option on the first screen of sapinst for Portal? The SP Stack 15 guide does not say what should come up, but I expect there should be some option like this.

Just as a matter of interest, I have obtained the error I got with the other way I did this:

The error in sapinst.log:

ERROR 2006-03-22 11:46:39

FSL-06002 Error 2 (The system cannot find the file specified.

) in execution of a 'CreateProcess' function, line (278), with parameter (jar ...).

The same error appears in sapinst_dev.log:

ERROR 2006-03-22 11:46:39 [synxctask.cpp:235]

CSyTaskImpl::start(false)

FSL-06002 Error 2 (The system cannot find the file specified.

) in execution of a 'CreateProcess' function, line (278), with parameter (jar ...).

The following warning also appears in the log:

WARNING 2006-03-22 11:46:39

The step lookForAlreadInstalledJ2EEEngine with step key EP60_PATCH|ind|ind|ind|EP60|ind|0|lookForAlreadInstalledJ2EEEngine was executed with status ERROR.

Hi Martin,

You should extract the SAR files for the portal into a <b>different</b> directory than the J2EE ones, then run SAPINST from there (folder \SAPINST-CD\SAPINST\NT\I386 for Windows). The first screen should then say EP6.0 SP15 > Updating the Portal Platform, with the option to choose which system you want to update. There is no first screen like the Web AS patch.

I haven't seen that error before. Do any of the errors point to which file is missing?

Hi Martin,

I think you are missing one of the SARs for the portal patch. You say you have extracted EP6CTRL15_0-10002786.SAR, EP6TOOLS15_0-20000394.SAR and EP6PORTAL15_0-20000394.SAR but there should be one called SAPINST15_0-10002786.SAR as well. Download this SAr and extract it into the directory with the other portal SARs.

Hi Jane,

I have extracted the SAPINST sar file as well. The other three I listed was when I tried extracting them in addition to the J2EE ones.

So in other words: I have also tried extracting all four SAR files (EP6* and SAPINST*) and when I run sapinst, I get the error that I described.

Just as a matter of interest, I did a binary compare on the two SPS15 SAPINST files one can download from /sp-stacks - one being SAPINST15_0-10002786 (for EP6) and the other being SAPINST15_0-20000118.SAR (for WebAS 6.40), and they are exactly the same.

Hello Jane,

Is there any particular order in which these files must be extracted? I'm sure I've tried all combinations by now, including the order in which they are listed in the SPS15 guide.

Also, I cannot see any indication in the logs as to what file it was looking for when it produced the error.

Thanks,

Martin

Hi Martin,

If you email me the whole log file, I could compare to my SP15 log & might see what it was trying to do: jane at finevinyl.co.uk.

I usually extract them in this order:

SAPINST*

EP6CTRL*

EP6PORTAL*

EP6TOOLS*

but I don't think it matters.

I have finally managed to resolve the problem, but I still don't know what the cause was.

What I did was the following, so I don't know which of them corrected the problem:

1. Restarted the computer

2. Stopped the antivirus and firewall services in Windows

(The J2EE server was in safe mode)

3. Deleted the sapinst work folder under Program Files\

4. Re-extracted the SAR files and executed sapinst
