in case you are still searching: the following blog might help you: Access Control Management: Basics of access control and business roles.
For example, for any given business role you can restrict access to Accounts/ Leads/ Opportunities and then use the restriction rule 4 - Employee (excluding active territory assignment) or 10 - Employees (for Non-Managers) or even 99 - Define Specific Restrictions.
