SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise EOL, Roadmap or version 17?

What is the future for ASE? The end of support dates are posted for 2025 for version 16, but there is no information on version 17, a migration, etc?

Some vendors (who won't be named) are starting to push clients to migration off ASE using 2025 as the reason. Six years sounds like a long time, but not when you have twenty five years of history with ASE. Is 2025 end of the line for ASE?

I've been asked to post the following statement regarding future releases of ASE as a standalone database product:

"The published End of Mainstream Maintenance (EOMM) date for ASE 15.7 is 12/31/2020. The successor to ASE 15.7 is ASE 16. ASE 16 has a published EOMM date of 12/31/2025. SAP publishes EOMM dates for all of their on-premise product versions and has been doing so for decades as part of the SAP Release and Maintenance Strategy (eg HANA has the same date published). These EOMM dates represent a commitment to our customers about how long they can depend on that specific version of the product to remain in mainstream maintenance before they need to consider moving to a successor version. SAP announces future product versions, options and/or maintenance extensions with significant lead times and are evaluated on a regular basis.

As SAP continues to transition to the cloud, including the introduction of SAP HANA Cloud, we remain completely committed to the long-term maintenance and support of SAP ASE in on-premises scenarios. Although we have published an EOMM date for ASE 16, this does not signal that it will be a last version of the product. Instead, it signals to our customers that this version will have the benefit of a long support cycle allowing them the flexibility to upgrade with the confidence of multiple years support in the event they cannot sustain another upgrade in a shorter timeframe. While we cannot yet comment on what the next version beyond ASE 16 will be named, we do plan on having an ASE 16 SPS release in 2020, and expect to have additional releases supported well beyond 2025.

As evidence of our commitment, we have decided to make the use of ASE, IQ and Replication Server part of our SAP HANA Cloud offering with delivery dates to be published soon. Even within SAP, ASE is broadly leveraged (000’s of servers) within our SAP Cloud Platform persistence service as well as our SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud private cloud service underlying the importance of SAP ASE to the SAP database portfolio."

After really a long time SAP has come out with some comments on ASE's future.

ASE being a workhorse, I suspect that lot of customers are still running APPs on older ASE versions (11x., 12.x, 15.x...)

Approach of application folks was "If its not broken why fix it ?"

Anyways I am glad to note that SAP will support ASE 16.x ( and next version going by your comments above) well beyond 2025.

ASE version 16.0 SP04 is planned for release later this year (2020).

SAP has just added ASE version 16.1 to the Product Availability Matrix, with an estimated release in Q4 of 2022 and an End of Mainstream Maintenance (EoMM) date of 31 Dec 2030.

Things are starting to look better for SAP/Sybase products.

Recently attended a road map webinar jointly hosted by folks from SAP and Bradmark.

Looks like ASE, RS and IQ are here to stay.

I do not have a link to the webinar recording handy.

I suggest SAP folks can publish/provide that link which may help to clarify.

Mainstream Maintenance:

SAP will prolong mainstream maintenance until the end of 2025 for SAP Business Suite 7 core application releases including SAP ERP 6.0, SAP Customer Relationship Management 7.0, SAP Supply Chain Management 7.0, SAP Supplier Relationship Management 7.0, and SAP Business Suite powered by SAP HANA 2013.

Sorry, the web page you're referencing is talking about SAP Business Suite stuff, not SAP ASE.

I think your statement, "After this date, I think, all customers must be migrate to HANA DB, S4/HANA" has no apparent connection to ASE (but please tell me if I'm wrong)

I do see some engineering activity for ASE, but not much. I usually check the SAP EDM Monthly Newsletter (formerly ASE+):

Up until about 5 years ago, the Sybase marketeers would note that ASE had 30,000 customers. I have not seen a reference to customer counts for a long time. I agree with Avinash; I hope SAP would care to share.

Disclosure : This is my personal opinion/observation :

ASE -- a very good high performance database - is like a proverbial cat with 9 lives !

So I hope that it will survive beyond 2025 !

On the other hand : Going by some indicators (e.g. ASE Standalone page was pulled off SCN) and also by absence of any news / movement for all ex-Sybase products (ASE, RS, IQ, ...), I wonder if this is slow but definite EOL for them !

Of course I may be completely off the mark. And will be very happy if things prove out to be otherwise.

Ultimately only SAP folks know the answer to your question(s) and hope they care to share.
