Hello Julian,
This is correct that SAP Customer Checkout requires Java.
Regarding the terms and conditions of usage of Java, you need to check it in providers website. I cannot comment on that.
However apart from Java SE 8, we also support SAP JVM for SAP Customer Checkout.
